I lived in Japan as a missionary for some years and attended every taiko concert I could find. A friend took me to a taiko factory one time and I got to meet a famous female drummer there. She had injured her arm so could not play until healed . With a translator she was most interesting to talk with. Sadly, the owners of the place were very proprietary and would not allow me to see how the drums were made. I was able to see the tree trunks and the finished products. All this was one of the high points of my time in this beautiful country. I still wish to thank all the fine people who I talked to for all the information they provided me. Me, being a wood-worker, was fascinated with the dedication and attention to detail the craftsmen showed in the completed drums.
I attended a taiko concert where most of the drums were at least 4ft. across. There were several that were larger than that. I sat in a chair about 300 + ft. from the performers. When the largest drums were struck, the vibrations traveled across the ground and made my chest also vibrated. It was marvelous.
Wife: "How was work today?"
Husband: "They really had me hopping"

Those are amazing Chain Saw Skills. Hats of to that gentleman ! !
Amazing. They take much time until the end of its making putting
great efforts into it. It is precise in technique and beautifully made!
English translation is expected so people overseas can understand
much more.
I think so, too. 同意
So beautiful work
I enjoyed this, and admire all of these artists! Much respect☺️
The every little detail of what they have to do to get the drum done the wait for the wood to dry slowly and all cuts off from chisels and the way they work the skin ready and tuning the drum is a job that takes years to accomplish and the knowledge and skills that they need to have but I think that they have to work on their self discipline and patience to get the drum perfected and sounding perfect
@@davidslefort6541 Much Respect ✊
Beautiful craftsmanship
I appreciate that, unlike Ocidental documentaries, there is no voice over. I understood the whole process without a single word.
That was amazing!!!!
USA Here. Excellent Video. Thank you

Unbelievable ! Japanese people are amazing. The 🙏🙏🙏
These workers were using power tools and heavy machinery and even then it took a lot of time and effort to make. Imagine how much time and effort it would've taken to make one of these back in ye olde days with ye olde tools.
Questions:
1) How did he create a perfect circle as he cut the wood?
2) The wood was long. How did his chainsaw go deep enough? The wood is like 4 times the length of his chain saw.
3) How long did it take to make the drum?
Sorry, I do not read Kanji.
Very thanks for the Producers of the video to be shared online. : -)
The drum making workers cut the wood from the both sides using the chain saw. There might be a 'special long' chainsaw which is not shown in the video used to saw through the wood. The workers work with patience and careful attention to quality. That's why they were able to make a perfect circle. A good kodo drum takes 5 years to be made. web-japan.org/kidsweb/cool/12-12-25/index.html
I can't believe he cut that center out with a chainsaw
with a realy HUGE!!111 chainsaw
To do it exactly parallel, he had to mess up at least few before I think :D
At 5:24, I laughed as hard as I have at anything on RUclips.
great precision
the correct way to cut this perfectly without waste would be with a cutting chain and a turntable
I'm not sure in the future, if there'll be enough large trees to make any more drums
we worker will feel the drums...hearing i am not so sure. They are sure ....all be deat. the work is wow
And the beat goes on.
My son builds outdoor furniture with trees, but he's never worked on anything THAT big!
Now THAT was amazing........................................
I cant believe the size of that tree, amazing craftmanship its fascinating to watch , although Id like to see how they were traditionally made.
Can anyone tell me the type of tree they use I'd love to see one alive ? Also do they continue making smaller and smaller drums from the remaining core ? its so cool
I'm pretty sure there aren't that many species of trees grow that big.
probably sequoia or related species.
It’s too late now but the species is called Keyaki or Zelkova
youtube, vuelves a sorprenderme con tus recomendaciones.
Serious question: How many people have died by a runaway drum?
four, to the best of my knowledge
How many people have died from a runaway tree. They ride them in Japan.
where can i buy one at? does ebay sale taiko drums?
Spettacolare! Fantastico! How much cost such a Taiko? Regards for you
7:55 Pretty sure I've heard that music in some nintendo game.

Japan is just awesome
Muito profissionalismo.
Wow how long they worked for the drum to get to the shape they were looking for
I can just see it now, in 2000+ years one of these will be found and everyone will say "but why would anyone make one this big? were there giants among them?"

Couldn't think of a better thing to be doing at 6am
The stupid way that I (an idiot) would make it is actually how they make them. That is one big tree, and there appears to be no big shortcut. Amazingly skilled work, cant believe it didnt come out wrong.
What kind of tree is used?
That is so true👍👍👍👍
what i was expecting to see: ???????
what i saw: some blokes jumping on a drum trampoline

Japanese has so many wonderful cultural crafts that are beautiful. They have much to be proud for. Living in America we do not have culture that is expressed in beautiful object. If we can all just get along together in America I guess that is as good as we can expect.

i would love a translation, what wood they are using
and what kind of skin? can someone translate, please?
欅
We use wood called zelkova.
Where did they find such a big piece of cow hide ?
cows are pretty big animals.
Who needs trees anyway, let’s make a drum.
